10 Reasons Why You Should Honeymoon Right After Your Wedding

Wedding expenses can be overwhelming and it might be tempting to forego the honeymoon altogether. But don’t! The trip does not need to be expensive and it might hold the key to a long-lasting marriage, especially if taken right after your Big Day. Here’s why!

1. THIS IS ALL ABOUT YOU

Your Big Day can quickly become about someone else: about your in-laws who want to invite one more person; about your mother, who insists you must follow all the rules since she doesn’t want to be embarrassed; and about your guests, whom you spend your entire reception dutifully thanking. Enough! Your honeymoon is about you two, and you alone. Learn to prioritise your relationship by blocking out the noise coming out from all those around you.

2. R&R

You’ve spent a year flitting from shop to shop to find the perfect bridesmaid dresses/ souvenirs/invites and so on. Organising your wedding can be extremely stressful. And, just because you’ve had more time to do so, it doesn’t mean you sailed through the experience. Get some well-deserved rest, and reboot your system by taking a trip which will gear you up for the next stage in your life.

3. HAPPY MEMORIES

This is your first adventure together, one which you will look back on and remember for years to come. Even when you hit rocky times, you will always have these to pull you through, reminding you what made your relationship so special and rediscovering what made you fall in love in the first place. Plus, it will show your kids that you were cool once

4. SOLVING PROBLEMS TOGETHER

Cancelled flights, missing luggage, less-than-perfect hotels: holidays sometimes do present us with challenges. And while these may be nothing compared to the bumps in the road a lifetime of togetherness can throw up, your honeymoon can serve as good practice (especially if you’ve never been away, or even lived, together before).

5. YOUR FIRST OFFICIAL LIVE-IN

Ok, so this goes specifically for those who wait to get married before moving in with their future spouses. Honeymooning right after your wedding gives you a more relaxed introduction to constantly being with the person you’ve chosen. Dating someone and waking up with them day in, day out, are two very different experiences. Think of your trip as the ‘starter pack’ edition.

6. SEX

Ok, we had to say it. It may be a cliché, but sex on your honeymoon is an experience not to be missed. Time away gives you a time to indulge and be naughty. Experiment and take some toys if you want, but always, always, have fun.

7. WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE

Living on a small island, where it’s so easy to see the borders of our country from Mdina’s bastions, it’s sometimes easy to feel claustrophobic or forget there’s a wider world out there. Get a sense of the outside world, together, to keep the vitality in your relationship alive and open to new experiences.

8. CREATE YOUR YEARLY TRADITION

Your honeymoon can mark the start of something you can look forward to every year: a trip to celebrate your relationship! This does not need to be expensive or time-consuming, but could simply be a weekend in Gozo. Alone. The important thing is to dedicate that space in your busy lives to reboot your love.

9. GET AWAY FROM ROUTINE

Alarm goes off at 7am, make the coffee, prepare some breakfast, get ready, don’t forget the laptop, work, home, cook, shower, bed. The dull regularity of our lives can be psychologically disturbing. And while every holiday provides an escape, there’s nothing like experiencing something new together to really escape the humdrum beat of our 9-to-5s.

10. START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON

You’ve vowed to love your spouse, for better, for worse, for richer and for poorer. And because your honeymoon represents the more positive of these qualities, it gives your marriage a hopeful view of the future. Start your marriage on a good note and set up the belief that this is the start of a fun and adventure-filled life together.
