5 Reasons Why You Should ask your In-laws for their Blessing

5 Reasons Why You Should ask your In-laws for their Blessing

We can live without some wedding traditions (cue the garter toss and dowries), but one proposal tradition that will never go out of style is asking your in-laws for their blessing before popping the question.

1. Let’s clarify – ask for their blessing, not permission

Let’s not turn this into a history lesson, but asking your future in-laws for their blessing is not the same as asking them to give away their daughter. In the past, the bride was often given away in exchange for a dowry. Thankfully, society has evolved and this practice has died down (though sadly, not completely), and asking them for their blessing before proposing to your partner is a courteous gesture that they’re bound to appreciate.

2. The decision affects them too

The commitment between you and your partner will affect both of you primarily, but it will also affect your respective parents. Bringing it up with them, even if in passing, shows your level of commitment to your partner’s parents, which could only be a good thing in our eyes.

3. Traditions are sentimental

Some traditions we’re happy to buck – we love white wedding dresses, but coloured dresses are also gaining popularity, and that’s totally ok. But other traditions are nice to hang onto. This is one of them, and if your significant other is especially close to his or her parents, then they’re likely to appreciate the gesture even more.

4. Who said old fashioned is bad?

We don’t condone the ‘women should stay home and cook’ kind of old-fashioned (read: sexist), but THIS kind of old-fashioned, which is cute and charming in its own way, is a totally different thing.

5. You’ll score some big points

Let’s not forget that asking your future kunjati for their blessing and well wishes before popping the question will likely score you some big points – and that can never, ever be a bad thing.
