If you were obsessed with ET when you were a kid, and you’ve always been fascinated by the secrets the skies above us can hold, then you’re not alone. And, today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts who are taking their interest to a whole new level, by travelling around the globe with the sole aim of experiencing the magic of the stars.
Astro-tourism has lit up globe-trotters’ trips, with many agencies set up to ensure a stellar view of the cosmos. But where are the best spots to get all goggle-eyed, with your partner or new hubby?
1. The Northern lights
Head to Canada, Alaska, Finland or Sweden and look up! The Northern Lights – spread across the topmost hemisphere of the earth – are legendary.
2. Mount Cook, New Zealand
New Zealand is known for its spectacular scenery and landscapes which will make you want to go back again and again. But, the joys are not only experienced during the day – the skies show off their sparkly mantle once the sun sets.
3. San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
A small town placed on a high plateau, San Pedro de Atacama does not suffer from the light pollution seen from other larger towns and cities. And, the altitude means you’ll be even closer to the gods (though you might need a period of acclimatisation!).
4. Sierra Morena, Andalucia, Spain
Take a camping trip with other couples and head to Sierre Morena in the stunning Andalucia in Spain. And, while you’re at it you can also visit other spectacular spots in the region – the towns of Ronda and Cadiz should be on your list!
5. NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia
This private reserve in the heartland of the African desert does not only offer a sea of ochre sand but aims to protect the wildlife of this unique part of the world. And, it has even been designated a Gold Tier International Dark Sky Reserve for keeping its night skies dark.
6. Antelope Island State Park, Utah, US
On the other side of the globe, the Antelope Island State Park in the US has also been designated as a ‘place to go’ by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), who fight light pollution worldwide. Spectacular views are in store for visitors at night – the perfect ending to a day of horse-riding and mountain-biking.
7. Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, Japan
Japan has so much on offer – cuisine, culture, manga – that it’s hard to pinpoint just one reason to go! So, add this to your list: star-gazing at the Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park in Okinawa will show you the best of all worlds in this knock-out nation.
