A wedding ring is a traditional symbol of marriage, but not everyone wants to wear one, for their own, personal reasons. We turned to our friends on Facebook group Wedding Talk to find out why someone may not want to wear a wedding ring, and why it’s perfectly okay whether you want to wear it or not.
1. They don’t like jewellery
“Married for 32 years, don’t wear it at all. I don’t like jewellery,” wrote Marthese. “Love and respect is what matters, not the ring.” Stephanie agreed. “I hardly ever wore my wedding ring. I don't like jewellery.”
2. They can’t wear it at work
“I got married last May and I didn’t wear it so much because I work as a pool coach,” wrote Emz. “But I wear it whenever I go out, or on occasions.” “I feel it is more hygienic if I don’t wear it at work,” said Alisia.
3. Or, their job makes it dangerous for them to wear it
“If he works on a construction site, it’s safer without the ring,” said Jolene. “My husband does not wear it to work because he works as a plasterer,” Yanika said. “However he wears it in the evening and on weekends.”
4. It’s too tight or loose for them
“My husband used to wear it every day, but after 12 years, the size of the finger has changed a bit and it is now fitting tight,” Stefania wrote.
5. They’re pregnant
“When I was pregnant, it didn't fit anymore!” Sue said. Josephine agreed. “When I was pregnant I had to remove it as my fingers were swollen. Otherwise I wear it all the time.”
6. They lost it
“I never wear my wedding or engagement rings... my husband threw them out last year by mistake!” wrote Tiffany. “To be fair, he did offer to buy me a new one, but it’s just not the same.”
“Unfortunately, I lost mine at Ghadira Bay,” Diane added.
7. They prefer to wear it only on special occasions
“I only wear it when the weather is cold and on occasions. I have sensitive skin and the ring irritates me,” Gabby wrote.
8. They’re scared of damaging it
“Some don't wear it because of work, others don't wear it because they don't want to scratch it,” Matthew said. “I fit in both categories, so I’ve already advised my partner that she's not going to see it often!”
9. They just took it off one day, and never put it back on
“I wore it every day for the first five years, then skipped a couple of days for no reason and I got used to the feeling of having my hands free!” said Diane. “I wore it again and it felt uncomfortable on my fingers. Now I'm trying my best to wear it on special occasions!”
