9 Wedding Veil Styles Every Bride-to-be Should Know About

Can you tell a birdcage veil from a ballet? Or a blusher from a mantilla? Here are all the varieties you should know about before walking down the aisle.

BIRDCAGE

A birdcage veil is the shortest length you can go for. Traditionally, it used to be worn over the bride’s bun, but nowadays, vintage-loving brides go for a birdcage veil which skims over the eyes for a chic and stylish look.

BLUSHER

The blusher veil is short and gauzy, covering the bride’s face until it’s time to exchange the first kiss as husband and wife. Demure but elegant, it’s favoured by many brides who want a modern look with a strong flavour of tradition.

ELBOW

You guessed – the length of this middle-of-the-road veil is till the elbow – not too short, but not too long either. They work especially well with A-line, puffy or ball gown dresses, because they end where the skirt starts to bloom.

FINGERTIP

Fingertip veils hang down to the ends of your digits, and are among the most popular and timeless styles of veils as they’re flattering with all gowns and suitable for all kinds of venues.

JULIET CAP

The stunning Juliet Cap veil was extremely popular in the 20s and 30s, and is now making a comeback. Ignore the tragically doomed name and consider it an option if you’re after a vintage look and softer feel than a birdcage veil.

BALLET

A ballet-length veil falls between your knees and your ankles, giving you all the beauty and drama of a long veil, with added peace of mind that you won’t trip on it. It’s also known as the waltz veil because it allows the bride to dance freely.

MANTILLA

If you love lace, opt for a mantilla veil. The traditional mantilla is a circular piece of lace or tulle with lace edging that frames the face, held in place with a comb. It adds a romantic, old-world glamour feel to a wedding day look.

CHAPEL

A chapel-style veil is slightly shorter than a cathedral-length veil, but still reaches all the way down to the ground, and works wonderfully with a train.

CATHEDRAL

Perfect for brides who love making an entrance (and an exit!), cathedral-length veils are the longest you can opt for, where they extend well past the hem of a wedding gown. The cathedral veil works best if your dress is extremely formal, has an accompanying train and – as the name implies – you’re getting married in a large church, where it can be displayed in all its glory.
