Melissa Mizzi Demajo and Duncan Mizzi, both self-employed, had always said they didn’t want to get married, but after three years together, they changed their minds!
Their proposal story could be called ‘Fourth Time Lucky’, as Duncan’s perfect proposal plans hit a few snags before finally succeeding. The couple was on holiday at the same destination where they’d first talked about marriage, and Duncan had meticulously planned the proposal. However, everything from suncream in Melissa’s eyes to chilly evenings got in the way. Finally, Duncan opted for a spontaneous proposal in a bar, which Melissa fondly recalls “that’s us I guess!”
Finally, the date was set - 7th June 2024. For their ceremony, the couple didn’t stick to a specific theme, they just wanted a “fun-filled day with personal touches”. Melissa designed the invitations and handled the decorations, with the expert help of Creations by H&S, who ensured that their venue, Razzet l-Abjad, was decorated to perfection for their special day.
For the dress, her priority was “to be comfortable while still looking like the bride”, trying to avoid heels and anything too "girly". Melissa’s journey to finding her perfect dress was a challenging one, as she visited shop after shop with little success. That changed when James at Eva Marie Bridal Shop confidently assured her that he had the dress she’d been dreaming of. He walked in with a gown sporting a lace bodice and an elegant train that she wasn’t sure about at first, but after trying it on, Melissa began to fall in love with it. By the next day, she knew it was the one and made her decision to buy it!
Melissa's after-party dress from Weddingbells Valletta was a stunning choice, featuring a flattering corset top and a tulle skirt. Paired with white trainers, it gave her the perfect blend of style and comfort to dance the night away!
Duncan selected the band Vinyl Paradise to set the mood for the event, and the king of 90s music, DJ Tony Tony, to ensure the afterparty brought each and every one of their 300 guests to the dance floor! The couple's fun-loving spirit also came through in their choice of a cake topper - a couple wearing handcuffs!
One element, however, was particularly special – sunflowers, and for a heartfelt reason. Since they began dating, Duncan had given Melissa a bouquet of her favourite flowers, sunflowers, every two weeks. To honour this tradition, Melissa’s cousin grew all the sunflowers needed for the wedding, filling the venue with a beautiful reminder of their early days together.
One little mishap did threaten to upset things for a moment, when the wedding arch, under which the ceremony was to take place, fell over just before Melissa arrived! But even this moment couldn't kill the "positive vibes" emanating from their wedding - Melissa and Duncan reminisce: "our favorite part of the wedding was having our family and friends all enjoying themselves together with us".
The photos from their gorgeous wedding, taken by the talented Justin Mamo, show that they truly achieved the fun-filled day they were hoping for, with ear-to-ear smiles radiating the joy of becoming each other’s forever.
Here's to many years of wedded bliss!
