A handwritten love letter. Yes, a little piece of paper is the secret to Elton John and husband David Furnish’s lasting relationship. When asked about love in a recent campaign interview for 6LACK’s new album East Atlanta Love Letter, Elton John and David Furnish spoke about the importance of communication in a relationship.

The method they found most effective? Writing each other a love letter every Saturday. They met on a Saturday in 1993, and without fail have been writing weekly love letters to each other for the past 25 years.

“Seeing the handwriting on paper and feeling the person’s humanity through that” is a feeling that is indescribable, said David Furnish. “The fact that we do it religiously every Saturday has been a very powerful bonding thing for us,” and – we agree! – “it’s not quite the same as a text or an email”.

In their letters, they write about the past week and the week that’s coming, and how they’re feeling. “It’s a way to check in with each other and work through difficulties together,” says Elton John. His husband adds that, after 25 years, he knows exactly what his better half is feeling just by seeing his handwriting. It’s like a “photograph of his personality”, he says.

And, no matter where they are in the world, the letters are sent without fail every Saturday. If it’s not a card on the pillow then it is a letter sent by courier, or even fax! The couple, who have two young sons together, revealed that all their letters from over the years are kept in a storage box in a safe in their house, described by Furnish as “a whole catalogue of our relationship.” They insist that communication is key, and the more personal the letter is, the better, showing the time taken to write a letter, which is ultra-romantic in our book!
