Government to Offer Pre-Wedding Courses

As part of the new Positive Parenting Policy which is set to be launched in the coming months, Government is planning to offer pre-wedding courses, which are currently only offered by Cana Movement to couples getting married in the Catholic Church.

Family Minister Michael Farrugia has reportedly said that the introduction of these courses is important, in light of the fact that currently, there are no preparation programmes targeted towards couples who are getting married civilly or entering into civil unions in Malta.

Indeed, as a spokesperson from the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity affirms, “as a Ministry we feel that such courses will be of benefit for all those who opt to get a civil marriage, since at the moment there is only the church (Ta’ Cana) course which is being offered and is compulsory for persons who celebrate Catholic marriage.”

Aimed at nourishing stable relationships, these marriage preparation courses will be open to everyone, and, according to the Family Minister, will be “very different” from the ones offered by Cana Movement.

“One of the areas we will certainly focus on is to train couples how to nip a problem in the bud and not let things get worse,” he said, maintaining that the courses will deal with a couple’s behaviour and identify problems at an early stage.
