Invitations

How to write an adult-only wedding invitation

When you’re planning your wedding and drawing up your guest list, you will have to decide whether or not you want to have the children of your guests present.

It’s slightly difficult to exclude kids if you’re hosting a destination wedding which will require your guests to travel, since this means that the parents will have to make extensive babysitting arrangements for while they are away. However, for weddings happening locally, it’s usually a given that evening or very formal weddings will exclude the company of children.

Etiquette dictates that your wedding invitation should include only the names of your guests, but not specify the fact that children are not invited. Only if guests RSVP that they are bringing kids should you call them to say that the ceremony is for adults only.

On the other hand, you could also take a more proactive approach – calling the guests who have children one by one after the wedding invitations have been received and explaining why you’d prefer to have a child-free wedding. Other guides advise you to include this explanation in the form of a handwritten note enclosed within the invitation.
Whichever route you decide to opt for, always make sure that your invitations are polite and addressed clearly to avoid any confusion, ambiguity or hurt feelings.
