1. THERE WAS A SMALL STAIN ON PRINCESS DIANA’S GOWN

Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles on July 29, 1981 in a historic wedding watched by millions across the globe. The princess’s wedding dress was kept secret until the moment she stepped out of her carriage, revealing a gown shimmering with 10,000 pearls and featuring a 25-foot long train. Lady Di had to be sown into it just hours before, due to the amount of weight she had lost in the run up to the ceremony, spilling a bit of perfume, and leaving a small stain on the dress, as she put on the final touches.

2. GRACE KELLY’S DRESS WAS A GIFT FROM MGM

Movie star Grace Kelly’s wedding to Prince Ranier of Monaco on April 19, 1956 came on the back of her glittering career and her roles in some of the period’s landmark films: Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window and Fred Zinneman’s High Noon, to name just two. And her gown reflected her A-list status: 25 yards of silk taffeta, antique rose-point lace and a wedding style which is replicated by thousands across the globe, even today. The dress was made by Academy Award-winning costume designer Helen Rose and was given to the star as a wedding gift. Unfortunately, the 26-year old actress retired on her marriage to the prince.

3. EXTRA PADDING WAS PLACED IN KATE MIDDLETON’S SKIRT

Grace Kelly’s dress was the inspiration for another gown decades later: that of Kate Middleton. Kate met her prince at university and ten years later tied the knot in a ceremony which took place at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton designed it, a fact which was kept secret from the public throughout the couple’s six-month engagement. The dress marked Kate’s entrance, and acceptance, into the royal family with her dress boasting features reminiscent of other royal weddings. And in a move inspired by Victorian class and style, subtle padding was placed into the hips to contrast with its corsetry, an Alexander McQueen signature.

4. AMAL CLOONEY’S NECKLINE IS A RAW EDGE

British-Lebanese human rights barrister, Amal Clooney, neé Alamuddin, is not happy saving the world. She also needed to bag herself one of the world’s most famous film stars, George Clooney, whom she married on September 27, 2014. Her Oscar de la Renta dress is a mille-feuille of ivory tulle, with a bodice covered in intricate beading and crystals. But the late legendary designer also included a raw edge on the dress’s bateau neckline, creating a look in keeping with the unique flair of the couple.

5. YOKO ONO’S DRESS REFLECTED THE COUNTER-CULTURE OF THE TIME

This may not be a little-known fact, but, then again, there are few Beatles-related things which haven’t been poured over at length. Japanese artist Yoko Ono was never one to follow the crowd and she looked as if she was ready to hit the tennis court with her mini-dress, white knee-high socks, a felt sunhat and topping it all off with oversized sunglasses.
