Finding the perfect wedding dress can sometimes feel like a slog, despite the array of bridalwear stores on the island. After all, you may be looking for a touch of magic which cannot easily be found in the drape of material or the cut of the sleeves. Maltese-Australian fashion designer, Jason Grech, understands this well and his wedding couture has graced catwalks, fashion magazine covers and many a bride’s special day, becoming one of the country’s foremost designers working right now.

And, indeed, just a glance through his catalogue tells you that this couturier – who launched his brand in 2003 – has managed to capture the essence of what every bride is looking for: a gown which feels personal – which feels hers – while, at the same time, elevating her shape and style.

But how did it all start? “The first wedding dress I did was for a close friend in 2000, and requests from that first dress were so overwhelming, I launched the brand soon after,” Jason tells OurWedding. In so doing, Jason filled a “a gap in the ‘party dress’ market”, which he worked to fill for 6 years, before slowly moving into the luxury red carpet and wedding dress market.

“My style and designs are all about fit and luxury. Our dresses form and shape the body to enhance a woman’s shape and we use the best fabrics, laces and crystals or beads available,” he explains. And, the drama embodied in the gowns can be seen in the sweep of the skirt, the lightness of the tulle used and the whimsy of the outline.

“We produce two wedding and two evening wear collections each year and they are all inspired by different things,” he says.

“My SS18/19 collection, for instance, was inspired by the St John’s Co-Cathedral in Malta and a Portuguese tile inspired the AW19 collection, while my current collection is inspired by lineal lines and Melbourne architecture.” These sources of inspiration have resulted in a variety of wedding gowns, as well as bridesmaid dresses, and evening wear for any red-carpet event.

Jason also accepts commissions from all over the world – even from Malta. He will, in fact, soon be on the island for Malta Fashion Week, during which he is hosting a trunk sale show for brides to view his creations and place an order. But, if you cannot wait till then, his official website and Insta account give a good view of the stunning work he has on offer, all of which can be shipped internationally.
