In an official tweet by Kensington Palace yesterday, it was announced that the soon-to-be-married Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have chosen their wedding cake flavour, and as per the couple’s ways, it is not a traditional flavour.
From the wedding of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to that of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton most recently, fruit cake has been the traditional British royal wedding cake of choice for generations. But not for this couple.
“Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have asked Claire [Ptak, owner of East London bakery Violet] to create a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring. It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers,” Kensington Palace said in a statement on Twitter.
“Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are looking forward to sharing the cake with guests at their wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19th.”
Claire Ptak and the bride-to-be met previously over an interview Meghan Markle had done for her now-defunct blog, The Tig, about Violet Bakery Café and Ptak’s concept behind her shop.
“I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be chosen to make Prince Harry and Ms Markle’s wedding cake,” Ptak told Vogue. “Knowing that they really share the same values as I do about food provenance, sustainability, seasonality, and, most importantly, flavour makes this the most exciting event to be a part of.”
