The “somethings” are usually small tokens of love that your female relatives will give you at the eleventh hour (or that you can give to yourself). This tradition also extends beyond trinkets for the bride and may be adopted by grooms too, if they wish. A few “somethings” include jewellery, hair accessories, embroidery in your dress, cufflinks, nail art, a new getaway car – you name it. The possibilities are endless.

Each “something” has a meaning for the whole ensemble. “Something old” was a way to ward off the Evil Eye (which was thought to cause infertility) and protect any future children. It also represents continuity, giving couples the opportunity to wear a sentimental piece of jewellery on such a special occasion.

“Something new” offers optimism for the future. The couple is entering a new chapter in life, so it makes total sense for them to sport “something new” on their wedding day. Most brides opt for a new piece of jewellery, an accessory, or even count their wedding attire as something new.

“Something borrowed” is believed to bring good luck to the couple. They would usually borrow something from a happily married friend or relative, hoping their good luck in marriage rubs off on them.
