WEDDING GUEST FAUX PAS: HERE’S WHAT NOT TO WEAR TO A WEDDING

Wedding Guest Faux Pas: Here’s What NOT to Wear to a Wedding

Confused about whether that fabulous dress you just bought is wedding appropriate or best saved for another occasion? Here’s the low down…

Mariah Carey set tongues wagging when she recently stepped out to attend a wedding in London wearing a VERY racy black ensemble. While the rules for wedding guest attire are certainly not as rigid as they were in our parents’ days, a few rules of etiquette remain – among them, don’t try to upstage the bride – and Carey’s daring lingerie-inspired look, well, might have taken things a bit too far.

Looking to avoid a similar faux pas? Not quite sure what’s acceptable? Here’s some advice we gathered from the experts to help you figure out what NOT to wear to a wedding.

1. IF IT’S RISQUE, DON’T WEAR IT

Avoid anything skimpy, see-through, bare-backed or plunging… or anything that attracts male attention of the seedy variety.

2. AVOID WHITE

An all-white or all-black outfit is a no-no, unless accessorised with colourful accessories.

3. BE CAUTIOUS WITH LACE

You can wear lace, but make sure you wear a shift underneath to avoid any see-through bits!

4. FOR THE BOYS: NO JEANS

There is no excuse to wear jeans unless the groom is wearing them, which, we would say, is highly unlikely.

5. WEAR APPROPRIATE SHOES

If you’re invited to a wedding on the beach, it should be obvious that sandals should take the place of stilettos, while a formal reception requires just that – formal shoes.

6. MAKE SURE YOUR CLOTHES FIT

Whatever you choice of outfit, it should fit you perfectly. We’re talking no bulges, folds or stretched seams.

7. ADHERE TO THE DRESS CODE

If a dress code is stipulated on the invitation, it is the height of bad manners to go against it. Do your research or ask around if you’re not sure what a particular dress code means, just don’t wing it!

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT…

Follow these basic guidelines and you’ll look fab WITHOUT getting the evil eye from the bride on her big day. Unless you’re Mariah Carey that is… you own that shit girl!
