What Should a Junior Bridesmaid Wear?
A bridesmaid with the junior prefix is one that’s way past the age of being a flower girl, but at less than 16 years of age, is still significantly younger than the rest of the bridesmaids.
The role of junior bridesmaid is one that’s usually reserved for a younger sister, cousin or niece. It’s a wonderfully fun role to have – she gets all the perks of being a bridesmaid without any of the duties. Her only responsibility is to get pretty and pampered before the wedding and then walk down the aisle with the rest of the bridesmaids. But at that age, what should she wear in order to fit in with the other bridesmaids?
If your bridesmaids are going to be wearing mismatched dresses, any smart dress that’s age-appropriate and adheres to the guidelines that you provide will do. If the rest of your bridesmaids are all going to be wearing the same dress, you still need to take the young age of the junior bridesmaid into consideration. Many bridesmaid dresses are very elegant and glamorous – not necessarily a style you’d like to see a 12-year-old wear. If you’re getting your bridesmaid dresses custom-made, you can talk to your seamstress about adapting the standard bridesmaid dress for someone who is much younger and probably a good bit shorter. No low-cut necklines and no dramatic slits.
When in doubt, consulting the parent of the junior bridesmaid is always a good idea. In all circumstances, cohesion is the key to having a beautiful bridal troupe, no matter how old the bridesmaids are.
